3 money mistakes almost every newcomer makes in Switzerland

3 money mistakes almost every newcomer makes in Switzerland

When you first arrive in Switzerland, those first salaries in francs look enormous. And that is exactly where the danger lies: the salary is bigger, but so is life. I have watched good people get into trouble — and I slipped on some of these myself. It is not a lack of intelligence. It is that nobody warns you beforehand. So let me warn you.

    1. Thinking that earning in francs solves everything

The number on the payslip is impressive when you convert it to your home currency. But you do not live converting it — you pay rent, health insurance and groceries in francs. And those three alone eat a share that shocks new arrivals.

A bigger salary only becomes freedom if you know where it is going. Without control, francs disappear exactly like any other currency. The money changes, the mistake stays the same.

    2. Sending money home in a rush, at the wrong rate

Wanting to help the family is natural, and it is a fine thing. The problem is making the transfer without looking at the rate and the hidden spread. Over the course of a year, the difference between a well-made transfer and a badly-made one adds up to a plane ticket — sometimes more.

Compare first. Save up and send at better moments rather than sending small panicked amounts every week. Small decisions, repeated, become big money.

    3. Having no emergency fund — and finding out on the worst day

Life as an immigrant has jolts: a contract that changes, a quiet winter, an expense out of nowhere. People without a cushion feel every jolt as if it were the end of the world. People with one feel a scare and carry on.

It does not have to be a lot. It has to be every month. Consistency beats amount.

    Where to start today

The cure for all three mistakes is the same: clarity. Knowing what comes in, what goes out and what is left. That is exactly why I put the platform's financial tracking tool online — multi-currency and free.

You do not need to become a finance expert. You just need to stop driving in the dark.
