Is it worth moving to Switzerland? What nobody tells you before you come

Is it worth moving to Switzerland? What nobody tells you before you come

"Is it worth moving to Switzerland?" It may be the most important question of all — and the one most badly answered out there, full of pretty photos and short on truth. So let me give you the honest answer from someone who lives it every day: it depends what you are looking for. For some it is worth its weight in gold; for others it does not pay off at all. I will show you both sides, unvarnished.

    What is genuinely worth it

Let me start with what is real and genuinely good:

    • Safety and peace of mind. Raising your children somewhere safe and organised, where things work, is priceless.
    • Quality of life and nature. Switzerland takes your breath away. I work driving through landscapes people pay a lot of money just to visit.
    • A salary that lets you build. With discipline you can have savings, travel and think about the future — things that for many people were only a dream.
    • A future for your children. Education, infrastructure and opportunity in one of the best places in the world to grow up.

The price nobody shows on Instagram

Now the part the "dream life" videos hide:

    • High cost of living. Everything is expensive. A big salary vanishes fast if you do not organise yourself.
    • Missing home. The distance from family and friends weighs on you — on special dates, in times of loss, day to day. That is by far the hardest part.
    • The language and starting over. You arrive and, in many respects, become a beginner again. It takes humility and stamina.
    • A more reserved culture. Friendships form more slowly here and the winter is long. Anyone coming from a warm country feels it.

Who it is worth it for (and who it is not)

It is very much worth it for people with a clear objective, a willingness to work hard and a focus on building something — especially thinking about family and the long term. It is not worth it for anyone chasing an easy ride, a shortcut or social-media glamour: that person gets frustrated quickly, because here the reward comes from effort, not from luck.

    My sincere answer

For me it was worth it and still is. Not because it is an easy paradise — it is not. It is worth it for what I can build for my children and for the peace of living somewhere that works. But I paid, and still pay, the price of homesickness and of starting over. Anyone who tells you it is all joy is selling you something.

Decide with your head, not only your heart

The biggest mistake is deciding on impulse, looking only at mountain photos. Before any step, put the numbers on paper: what it costs, what you would earn, what would be left. That is exactly why I built the free NM23 financial tool — so you can simulate your life here in francs, euros and your own currency before deciding. And if you want the practical path, I have written about how to move to Switzerland as a foreigner.

Quality of life and homesickness will walk side by side for a good while — and that is fine, it is part of it. "Worth it" is an answer only you can build, with your eyes wide open to both sides of the scale, without the filtered photo they sell out there.
